Chain of Lakes Trail south

This is a view of the Chain O'Lakes Trail as we started to ride through the southern part of Grant Woods. This part of the trail seemed a little more open (less wooded) although there were a some more wooded areas too.

Marshy area near bike path

The southern part of the trail has one big loop (with a few sections of trails branching off of it). We headed south on the west side of the loop and took the eastern part of the loop back north. There is a marshy area off to the right here.

small pond next to bike path

There was a small pond (on the left) next to the trail at this point. This is just past an opening that goes out to W. Caine Road which heads east out to Fairfield Road.

Family on bike trail

We rode this trail on a weekday in June and there were other bike riders and groups of riders, like the family in the photo above, out on the trail.

COL leg to Fairfield Road

We took the leg that branches out from the main trail and heads through a wooded area and out to Fairfield Road. I believe that the photo above with the bridge is on that section. We also found a bench in a shady area there where we took a break and had a snack.

Wooded part of COL path

Still winding through the southern part of Grant Woods on the COL trail in the photo above. This was just before we reached the southern end of the trail where it runs along Rollins Road. The Rollins Road part of the trail is practical to get around but not as nice as the ride through the woods.

View of Long Lake from the road

After you cross Rollins Road there is a road (Lake Shore Drive (of course)) that heads out to Long Lake as shown in the next few photos. This was actually a nice side trip off of the main Chain O'Lakes trail. You need to ride on the road but there was not many cars when we were there and it goes through a small residential area where the speed limit is low.

Long Lake view from LSD

This is another view of Long Lake as we rode by on the Lake Shore Drive or LSD as we call the one in Chicago.

Long Lake as seen from Lake Shore Drive

Speaking of LSD (Lake Shore Drive, of course :-) ), the lake was colorful and pretty scenic here. Our ride into the residential area was pretty nice too. Although the main Chain O'Lakes trail runs through Grant woods we are in the Chain of Lakes area and there are no shortage of lakes here.

Chain O'Lakes Trails Trail Photo Tour

Here's the photo tour of the Chain O'Lakes Trail through Grant Woods, near Fox Lake, a side trip to Long Lake and the Bike Path through Chain O'Lakes State Park. This ride was from June, 2014.
